What are subjects, and how are they being used?

Subjects are divisions of the curriculum used to provide students with accessible categories of modules when they make a module choice via Study at the OU. There are 3 levels of subjects:

• Subject (level 1) e.g. ‘Arts & Humanities’
• Sub-subject (level 2) e.g. ‘History’
• Library subject (level 3) – a further refinement of the sub-subject.

The subject screens

A subject at any of the three levels is created via screen CS555.

Sub-subjects and library subjects are linked to higher level subject categories via screen CS556.

Modules are linked to subjects via screen CS508.

Qualifications are linked to subjects via screen CS557.
